Manga & Anime
The Mini Toji series is a short-length chibi anime adaptation of the original anime series titled Toji no Miko. On May 15th, 2017, the series’ official website and studio Gokumi announced the production of the series. It was directed by Kodai Kakimoto & written by Tatsuya Takahashi. It started airing from January 5th, 2018 to June 22th 2018 and ran for 24 episodes on different networks.
To give the anime a head start, a manga adaptation titled “Katana Maidens: Toji No Miko” was also made before the anime broadcast. It was written by Sakae Saito, and published by Kadokawa Shoten. Later on, 2 OVAs named Katana Maidens – Tomoshibi by Studio Project No 9 were released on October 25th, 2020 & November 29, 2020. Following the original series, there was a game adaptation named Katana Maidens ~ Toji No Miko: Kizamishi Issen no Tomoshibi too which was published on March 19th, 2018.
As for Mini Toji, it had a 10 episode TV animation series and a special episode. It was directed by Yuu Nobuta, written by Aoi Akashiro, and was produced by Studio Project No 9. The series first aired on January 12th, 2019, and ran till March 16th, 2019, and the special named Mini Toji Yume came out on 24th, 2019.
Will There Be Mini Toji Season 2?
The return and production of the chibi series are solely dependent on its parent series. The same happened in the case of other famous chibi series like Specials of series Shakugan no Shana, and Isekai Quartet, which is based on a spin-off of different characters of many Isekai series. All these were able to get new episodes because of the continuation of their parent series. Therefore, before Mini Toji Season 2, the sequel of the original series Toji no Miko is a must.
There is no issue for writing or source for the Chibi series as it is mostly a pun & parody like a comedy of the previous series. So, there is a good chance that the series could return with Toji no Miko season 2.
Plot Details
The main story of Mini Toji follows an elite group of shrine maidens known as Toji in Japan, who have worked together with the government for many years to fight strange vicious beings called Aratama. The government established five elite schools for young girls to provide special swordsmanship training to become a Toji and help to fight Aratama.
Kanami Etou is chosen to represent Minoseki Academy, one of those five schools, in a sword-fighting tournament. She meets Hiyori Juujou in a tournament and soon the world of Toji starts crumbling from inside out, and then their journey begins to end this curse. Along the way, they find several allies who join hands to support them in this tough journey.
While Toji no Miko was filled with action and suspense, Mini Toji on the other hand was a relaxing and hilarious tale of their day-to-day life. The next season of Mini Toji will also be “not much related” to the second season of Toji no Miko, but there can be some new characters that will renew the fun.
Release Date
As mentioned earlier, Mini Toji Season 2 requires the second season of Toji no Miko. The series is fairly active on the internet and television and it even released OVA episodes in previous years. There hasn’t been any cancellation announcement but there is a slight issue. The next season will probably not be produced by Genco but Project No 9 instead. However, the studio already announced two new projects for this year and their schedule seems to be pretty much packed. So, if any announcement is made for the series, it might only come in the last quarter of this year. If that happens, then Mini Toji might return by the end of 2023.
