On July 7th, 2017, Kadokawa announced an original anime named Uchuu Yori mo Tooi Basho, aka A Place Further Than Universe, at its Anime Expo booth.
The series was directed by Atsuko Ishizuka & written by Jukki Hanada. Its first season was produced by Studio Madhouse. The series ran for 13 episodes from January 2th, 2018 to March 27th, 2018.
The series received a manga adaptation as well. It was written by Yorimoi, illustrated by Meme Yoimachi & published by Media Factory. The series collected 3 volumes and 17 chapters from December 27th, 2017 to February 27th, 2019.
Will There Be a Sequel?
The series was a high hit in 2018 & was considered the best anime among all the anime in 2018 by critics. Not only this, but the series also bagged a rating of 8.54 by 175K members of its MAL group. It is ranked at #93 overall & #411 on the popularity poll on the same platform.
So. it would be certainly a waste to drop a series this good. However, the aim of the story is completed, and the unnecessary continuation might put off fans. Hence, the creators are taking time to think whether they should renew A Place Further Than The Universe with Season 2 or not. Therefore, we might return have to wait on the series for a while.
Plot Details
The story of A Place Further Than Universe follows Shirase Kobuchizawa, a second-year High Schooler. She is working hard for years to save enough so that he can go on a trip to Antarctica.
Many years ago, her mother disappeared as she went to Antarctica as a part of the research team. Shirase is prepared to go on an adventure and search for her mother.
Her expedition is joined by Mari Tamaki, Hinata Miyake & Yuzuki Shiraishi, who all have one thing in common, and that is their love for adventure. The adventure and story of this gang are filled with fun, drama, and some twists and turns. The series ended with the mystery of her mother and everyone returned home.
So, if A Place Further Than Universe Season 2 takes place, it will probably just be an aimless adventure with more fun and drama, to find something more beautiful than the end of the world.
Release Date
It’s been 3 years and there is still no news regarding the continuation or cancellation of the series. The main reason behind this delay is the satisfying end of its first installment. The series did conclude with a heartbreaking but warm end which made it even more beautiful. Now, the creators certainly don’t want to ruin this end by making A Place Further Than Universe Season 2. However, if fans continue to demand another season, then the show might get an update by 2023.
