Oyasumi Punpun's Afro God

Author Reveals Oyasumi Punpun’s Afro God Original Design

Oyasumi Punpun’s famous Afro God wasn’t supposed to look like what fans have seen until now.

In the manga, the Afro God that the lead character Punpun worships, made an appearance in the first chapter. With his uncanny face, peculiar smile, and glasses, God’s design in manga was not something its readers could easily forget.

However, Oyasumi Punpun’s author Inio Asano has revealed that the original design for the God was very different.  In his recent tweet, Asano revealed first chapter’s rough manuscript where he revealed Punpun’s God’s first look.

The first design resembled Lord Budhha a lot and the peculiar smile and glasses were not part of it. Both the designs are so different that Asano himself said that the difference between them scares him.

Oyasumi Punpun (Goodnight Punpun) is an original manga written and illustrated by Inio Asano. The manga was published in Shogakukan’s Weekly Young Sunday from 2008 to 2013 and later in Weekly Big Comic Spirits. With 13 volumes and 147 chapters, the series currently has 3 million copies in circulation.

It follows the story of a young boy named Punpun. He has dreams like a normal kid, and wants a normal life with a girlfriend. But, his dreams are far from reality.
